What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a modality of medicine which is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Whilst tracing its roots back over 2,000 years it is still thriving in the 21st century with many patients finding relief for a wide range of conditions with many clinical trials backing ups its efficacy. Treatment involves inserting incredibly fine needles into specific points on the body where Qi (pronounced chee) flows through channels.

A blockage in this flow arising from a number of causes both physical and emotional can cause illness or pain. The aim of treatment is to promote smooth flow of Qi with treatment being targeted at the root cause of symptoms to achieve optimal health and well-being.

Practitioners at The Wellum clinic are Integrated practitioners. In addition to practicing TCM we also use Five Element Acupuncture which is based on the five elements of nature: fire, earth, metal, water and wood, Five Element Acupuncture has been used as a method of diagnosis and treatment for over two thousand years.

Sometimes referred to as the “Five Phase” theory, it is believed the five elements represent our controlling and creative energies. Ideally, all five of these elements should be in balance. Should imbalance occur we develop ill health which can manifest in physical or emotional symptoms. Creating balance within the Five Elements can bring profound benefits physically and create a sense of emotional well being.
